Again. Again. And Again.

"We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. "

—T.S. Eliot

There are certain places to which I have to return. It's not nostalgia or the lure of escaping the present by burrowing into some happy memory. It's the need to ground; to be at home; to feel and know what can only be known in a particular place. Sometimes a certain place, a certain geography, is the only place where we can see essential pieces of our own puzzle. It could be the way the Light shines just so or the way the journey to the place wears us down enough that our outer layers can slip off and slip away.

For me that place is found in and among paths and lakes named Edna, Our Lake, Ten Lakes. It's found up and down over high passes like Sand Mountain and Snowyside. South Central Idaho's Sawtooth National Recreation Area is popular enough, yet also rugged, steep, and deep enough that there are empty places and pockets that can (selfishly) feel like they are my own. After many, many years and many miles traveled, I know that in certain spots, sitting just so, or rounding one last switchback, I will find my "missing self" waiting to greet me. I think in some unaware way I leave those pieces behind, like breadcrumbs, so I can find my way back again.

Where do you return, again and again? What piece of you is found there? One of my greatest joys is to share my home places with others--and to help them find their own place, path and breadcrumb trail that will lead to something more, and to something we might call "home."
